Doctors roughed up by Asha Praekh Hospital staff

The management of the Santa Cruz-based Asha Parekh Hospital has declared a lock-out after doctors and staffers were assaulted on Thursday evening.

“We have served a 13-day notice to 17 authorities including police and the labour court that if adequate steps are not taken then we will shut down the hospital,” said Dr Mugat Shah, chairman of the hospital.

On Thursday, union workers from the BCJ General Hospital forcibly entered the hospital premises and allegedly physically assaulted doctors and a few administrators. The union members were also seen threatening patients, staffers and doctors, said Shah. A Mulla of Nanavati Hospital, who had joined the Asha Parekh Hospital just three days back, was severely injured. “He faced the fury of the mob and was injured badly,” said Naved Mulla, his son. “He is still recuperating at Nanavati,” he added.

According to the police, the hospital management had dismissed four workers earlier and they retaliated with violence. “We have put adequate bandobast at the hospital following the incident,” said police inspector SA Jadhav, Santa Cruz police station. “According to our information, the hospital is not closed and no arrests have been made in the case so far,” he added.

Shah also said that since the doctors were not turning up out of fear, it was impossible to run the hospital.
