COLOMBO: At least 14 LTTE militants were killed and one soldier injured in clashes between Tamil rebels and security forces in restive northern Sri Lanka, the army said here on Friday.
    
Meanwhile, the Pro-LTTE website 'Tamilnet' said attempts by the army to advance to Kilali and Muhamale in Jaffna were repulsed by the Tigers near the Forward Defence Lines on Thursday morning.
    
Sri Lankan Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka visited Jaffna peninsula to review the security situation on Thursday.
    
Four LTTE cadres were killed during a retaliatory attack by troops after they were confronted by rebels in Vilathikulam area of Vavuniya yesterday, the Defence Ministry said, adding there were no casualties on the government side.
    
Also, one militant was killed during a confrontation in Periyathampane while three rebels were killed in Thampane in Vavuniya yesterday, it said. A soldier was injured in a mine explosion in Vilanththikulam area.
    
On information received from a civilian, troops recovered one T-56 weapon, one magazine and 18 rounds of ammunition from the general area of Kadirppal in Jaffna yesterday morning, the
Media Centre for National Security said.
    
Another tip-off from a civilian led to the recovery of two LTTE communication sets with one charger, 1,020 rounds of T-56 ammunition and seven magazines on Thursday in Valachchene area in Batticaloa, it said.
