Film City worker Sunil Dayalkar, his wife Khushi and accomplice Shefali Bishwas were sentenced by judge Chitra Bhedi on Thursday to three years rigorous imprisonment for forcing young women into prostitution.

All three accused have been in custody since their arrest in January 2005 and will, therefore, be released in the next few months. The period they have spent in custody will be set off against their sentence.

The judge has further ordered Dayalkar to pay a fine of Rs5,000 and the two other accused a fine of Rs300 each.Three other accused, who brought the women to Mumbai from West Bengal, absconded while on bail.

The police were unable to trace them despite court orders. “These accused who bring girls from other states to Mumbai, invariably abscond while on bail. The police do nothing to bring them back,” said prosecutor Mohan Sawant, “The law should be amended to make this offence non-bailable.”

“While one of the victim’s turned hostile in court, another victim Rani (name changed) identified the accused in court,” said Sawant.

Rani, 25, told the court that she was brought to Mumbai by a classmate, Munti, who promised her a nurse’s job at Rs5,000 per month. Munti arranged for her to live with Dayalkar and his family who pushed her into prostitution despite her resistance.

She finally managed to call her mother in West Bengal who gave her a contact in Mumbai. With the assistance of the contact she managed to escape and lodge a complaint with the police. She saved two of her companions Swati, 15 and Shuri, 17, from Dayalkar’s clutches. Shuri was not examined by the police and Swati turned hostile in court.
