NEW DELHI: A speeding Blueline bus on Wednesday knocked down and killed an elderly man and critically injured another here, making him the 109th victim of the capital's notorious 'killer' buses this year.

The bus, plying on route no. 937 between Sultanpuri and Old Delhi, hit the scooter rider, Surinder Anand, 53, and his pillion Naseem near the Punjabi Bagh flyover. The accident took place in the afternoon.

Both men were rushed to a hospital where doctors declared Anand dead. Naseem's condition was stated to be critical. He had suffered multiple fractures.

The driver of the bus, Vinod Kumar, fled from the spot but was later arrested.

A reporter of a private television news channel who had gone to cover the accident also suffered minor injuries after she was hit by another Blueline bus.

The driver of the second bus was on large till late Wednesday.

The 4,000-strong Blueline bus fleet, which forms a crucial part of Delhi's public transport system, is under attack for the recklessness of its drivers and owners but officials say they are helpless to check the menace. But officials say in the long run the Blueline buses would be phased out.

In a separate accident, a five-year-old boy was crushed to death after he came under the wheels of a speeding car driven by a juvenile in northwest Delhi Wednesday morning.

According to the police, Arun was going to the Tagore Public School in Aman Vihar when he met with the accident. Arun was admitted to the Ambedkar Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Following the accident, Arun's relatives and some others roughed up the 17-year-old youth before handing him over to the police. The driver, a Class 11 student, was driving to his school.
