NEW DELHI: State-run telecom service provider MTNL on Wednesday said it will add about 50,000 broadband customers by March next year.

"MTNL is working hard towards increasing the broadband customers base by about 8000-9000 by December 15 and about 50,000 by March next year," MTNL Delhi Executive Director AK Arora said here while launching 'Sarv Bhasha Sandesh', a new value added service for its postpaid and prepaid mobile customers.

Asked about setting up more base transmission stations (BTS), he said "we have already set up 660 BTS and are planning another 392 BTS by March next year".

The MTNL's new application, launched on Wednesday in the city, would enable its subscribers to send short messaging service (SMS) in 11 Indian languages.

"This service gives the customers an opportunity to compose and send SMS in the language of their choice and thereby encourages the use of own mother-tongue such as Hindi and Tamil," Arora said.

The new messaging service is available in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. This technology will help MTNL Delhi subscribers communicate in the language of their choice and expects 10 per cent growth in SMS usage of MTNL from this application, he added.

The application has been developed by Geneva Software technologies and can be activated by downloading the language specific application on the handset. Downloading or installing language specific application requires a GPRS-enabled handset or a handset with bluetooth, Infra red or cable facility.

The SMS charges would be Re 1 per message for local and STD of Dolphin postpaid and Rs 2 for Trump prepaid connections.
