LONDON: While Luanda, the capital of Angola may not be familiar for many, a study has revealed that it is the most expensive city for expatriates in the world.

The study released on Tuesday also showed that London has overtaken Tokyo as one of the world's most expensive cities for expatriates.

While Tokyo slipped out of the top 10 due to the declining yen and low inflation, London climbed from 17th to 10th on this year's list.

The annual survey, conducted by human resources organisation ECA International found that Luanda, the Angolan capital, was the most expensive city for expatriates, followed by Oslo and Moscow.

The survey studied 125 economic factors, including the cost of luxury goods, meals in restaurants, electrical goods, clothing and groceries in more than 250 cities.

According to Mercer Human Resource Consulting, in 2006 Mumbai occupied the 68th position followed by Delhi (73rd), Chennai (137th) and Bangalore (139th).

This year's figures for the Indian cities were not available.

African capitals occupied high positions because luxury goods often came at a high premium. Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon's Libreville were also in the top ten.
