Beleaguered Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has found an unlikely ally in the form of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, a man who is accused of masterminding the 2002 communal conflagration in his state.

“She is welcome to come and stay in Gujarat. She can carry on her work in the field of literature and serve mankind,” Modi said. “Even if she criticises me in her book, I will welcome it.”

Nasreen has been hiding in India after she received death threats from Islamic fundamentalist groups for her 1994 novel Lajja. The author, till recently, was in Kolkata is now at an undisclosed location near Delhi. The 45-year-old doctor-turned-author arrived in Delhi at the weekend after the Rajasthan government told her to leave for "security reasons."

Nasreen, who fled Bangladesh in 1994, had been living in Kolkata since 2004, after spending time in Europe and the United States. Modi's views mirror those of others in BJP who have demanded that India grant the author "political refugee" status.
