NEW DELHI: Students of Delhi’s government schools will soon be dressed up by some of the upcoming fashion designers of the country. The state government has asked the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) to design a uniform for the students.

All 6,000 government schools in the capital have different uniforms now. The government has decided to make a single uniform mandatory for all of them.

“The red uniform will give a unique identity to the students,” said education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, adding that the government was taking these steps to ensure that students coming from poor backgrounds do not feel inferior to children studying in private schools.

“At present, every government school has a dress code of its own decided by its principal. This deprives government school students of a distinct identity at the state level,” said Lovely.

“We believe the new uniform will not only make the students look smart, but they will also feel confident,” he added.

Lovely said during inspections, it was found that neither students nor parents pay much attention to uniform.

“Sometimes, students were found to attend schools in casuals because they did not want to wear uniforms. We believe a designer uniform will not only make the students wear it but also keep it well,” said the minister.
