LAHORE: Pakistani ex-premier Nawaz Sharif returned home on Sunday thanking God and vowing to play his part in the nation's turbulent politics.

Minutes after touching down at the airport in the eastern city of Lahore, the man ousted in a coup eight years ago by Pakistan's current military ruler Pervez Musharraf said he was not out for vengeance.

"I thank God that I have arrived in Pakistan," senior party officials, who were among the first to greet him, quoted Sharif as saying.

"We will fully participate in national politics. We don't believe in the politics of vengeance."

Sharif will file nomination papers tomorrow.

Sharif, wearing a white traditional Pakistani tunic overlaid with a black waistcoat, was seen beaming and waving to jubilant supporters packed into the arrivals hall at Lahore amid scenes of chaos.

His return comes with Pakistan in turmoil, under emergency rule imposed by Musharraf three weeks ago and with an opposition still undecided whether to boycott general elections on January 8.
