KOLKATA: Demanding that Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen be brought back honourably to the state, the BJP on Saturday said she was shunted out of West Bengal by the Left government for 'Muslim votes' and to divert the people's attention from Nandigram.

"The way Taslima was virtually hounded out by the CPI-M-led government, is a black spot on the state," state BJP general secretary Rahul Sinha told.

"She (Taslima) was shunted out of the state by the ruling party for Muslim votes and to divert people's attention from the recapture of Nandigram," he said, adding Taslima be brought back here immediately with honour.

The BJP leader said it was surprising that Opposition parties like Trinamool Congress and Congress which were very vocal about democratic norms, had maintained a studied silence.

"All these parties are also eyeing Muslim votes," he said.
