ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is to hold general elections on January 8, officials said on Tuesday, more than two weeks after President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency.

"The final list of candidates will be issued on December 15 and elections will be held on January 8," a government official told AFP on condition of anonymity. The chief election commissioner was due to officially announce the date on state television later on Tuesday. The government said on Sunday that Musharraf had recommended January 8 as the polling date.

Musharraf has been under pressure from Washington and opponents at home to drop the state of emergency before the elections are held, amid concerns that they will be neither free nor fair.    Exiled former premier Nawaz Sharif told AFP on Monday that taking part in the elections under emergency rule was 'not possible', but fellow opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has said she is still considering a boycott.
