NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday asked some private schools, given land at concessional rate but which failed to provide free education to poor children as per allotment terms, to give an undertaking on complying with freeship terms in academic year 2008-2009 .

A Division Bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked the schools to comply with this court's May 30 order asking them to provide freeship to poor students and in case of failure the lease deed of the school would be cancelled.

Besides, the government could consider taking over the management of such school and a contempt of court proceeding could be initiated against the schools, the court order added.

The city government has filed a detailed affidavit with a list of 397 schools out of which only 122 schools have filed the affidavit and rest are yet to give their undertakings on providing freeship to poor students for the year 2008-2009 before the court.

On another petition filed by some minority schools seeking exemption from giving such freeship the Court said it would consider the application later but for the time being the Court's earlier order was applicable on all the institutions.

In its last hearing, the Court had directed the city government to submit a list of private schools, which were given land at concessional rate but had failed to provide free education to children from economically-weaker sections.
