MUMBAI: The city's airport authorities are presently probing the cause of a blackout of runway lights last evening which resulted in operations coming to a standstill for close to half an hour.

The Approach Light System, which includes runway and other light systems on the ground, of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport went out at approximately 1921 hrs and were restored only about half an hour later as a result of which the runway was not visible for airborne pilots. The backup for the system also reportedly failed.

Flights were unable to take off or land for the entire duration while the lights were off.

A spokesperson for the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said they were presently probing the cause of the incident.

"We are still to ascertain the cause of the incident and will decide appropriate action to be taken after that," he added.
