SHANGHAI: Masters Cup finalist David Ferrer heaped praise on Roger Federer on Sunday after being demolished by the Swiss defending champion in straight sets.

The Spaniard beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, the world numbers two and three, on his way to the final but said Federer was a class apart.

"Maybe Federer, Djokovic and Nadal are on another level to other players but Federer is different," said Ferrer, who was taken apart 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

"He can do it all. He serves very well, he has a very good forehand and backhand. He has no weak points.

"He's not just number one, he's the best in history. He has 12 Grand Slams and I'm sure he'll get the record (14)."
Ferrer was unbeaten in the year-end tournament heading into the final but more than met his match in Federer, who controlled the match from start to finish for his fourth Masters Cup title.

Ferrer said Nadal, Federer's nearest challenger in the rankings, still had too much ground to make up and predicted the 26-year-old Swiss could keep up his level of play for several years.

"Rafa got more rankings points this year but it's still 1,000 points. It's too much," he said.

"Federer can maybe play at this level for four or five years. Federer is the best but the next is Rafa."

The modest Ferrer, who won in Auckland, Bastad and Tokyo, was left to celebrate his best season to date but said he did not expect to challenge for the top rankings places next year.

"For me this year was perfect," he said. "Rafa and Djokovic are young and they are better than me. For me to finish top 10 or top 15 is a very good ranking and I'm very happy with that."

Ferrer, 25, beat Nadal, Djokovic, Richard Gasquet and Andy Roddick to reach the biggest final of his career and improve his ranking to fifth.

Federer was shocked by Fernando Gonzalez in his opening match but then roared back to form. He won three Grand Slam titles this year to remain on course to break Pete Sampras's record of 14.
