JAMSHEDPUR: The demolition of the 'Ram Setu' for the Sethusamudram project would threaten national integrity and security besides hurting the religious sentiments of the people of the country, the Sankaracharya of Dwarika Peeth Swami Swarupanand Sarswati said here.

Criticising the political parties for politicising the Ram Setu, Swarupananda Saraswati told newsmen last night that none of them intended to resolve it or Ayodhya Ram temple issue and kept them lingering for 'political gains'.

He lambasted the DMK government in Tamil Nadu as well as union minister T R Balu for misleading the country on the issue and claimed that the government's proposal to develop an international water transport route by demolishing the Setu would not serve the purpose as the depth of water at the spot was very little.

Sankaracharya also criticised the successive NDA and UPA governments at the Centre for the imbroglio over the issue and said the political parties should desist in making Setu Samudram issue a political one.

Claiming that the Setu was thousands of years old and a man-made one, he said it would have been demolished had the stay order not been procured from the Supreme Court.

The Sankaracharyas of all the four peeths, including himself, had at a meeting in Bangalore in May opposed the government's decision to demolish the Ram Setu for developing the Sethusamudram project and had decided to mobilise support of the people across the country, he said.

The country-wide ongoing campaign to garner public support to protect the national property will be intensified soon, the Sankaracharya said.

Justifying their stand against the demolition of the Setu, he said in such an eventuality it would provide a free entry to the enemies into the country and render over 50,000 fishermen families without job.

Besides, thousands of aquatic fish and plant species which play a vital role in protecting sea water from pollution will become extinct and a rich deposit of thorium would be washed away, he added.
