NEW DELHI: The NCERT has embarked on a major initiative to promote peace education in South Asia.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training, which already has a peace education programme in the country, is set to extend it to eight member countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

"We have just started the initiative. One meeting has been held and another meeting will be held soon on this programme," NCERT Director Prof Krishna Kumar said.

Peace education is the process of acquiring the values, the knowledge and developing the attitude, skills and behaviour to live in harmony with oneself and with others.

The NCERT's initiative assumes significance in view of political instability and various types of conflicts prevailing in the SAARC region.

The NCERT had held a consultative meeting earlier which was attended by eminent educationists, academicians and experts on peace education.

The peace education programme would facilitate sharing of experiences in the SAARC countries and building shared structures for promoting such education in the region. Under the programme, a region-wise pool of eight to ten people may be formed who will monitor the work in the region.

Research may be undertaken under the programme to find out the causes of conflicts and remedies. Advocacy, development of database of existing materials and translation of materials on peace education could also be taken up under the programme.

There are plans to exchange resource persons on peace education and social scientists in the SAARC countries. There is also a plan to organise an India chapter on the training of teachers and development of reading materials.
