ISLAMABAD: Two leading private Pakistani television news channels broadcasting out of Doha have been shut down amid pressure from military ruler Pervez Musharraf, the networks said on Saturday.

Geo and ARYOne had been blacked out on cable here since November 3, when Musharraf imposed a state of emergency, but had still been available on satellite and the Internet until Friday night when they were fully closed.

“We have been asked to shut down our transmission from Friday midnight,” Kamran Khan, a senior official at Geo who hosts a popular talk show on the channel, told DNA.

Earlier, on November 3, local and international television channels disappeared from cable television in Pakistan amid media curbs imposed by Musharraf.

The private televisions networks were then asked by the regime to sign the 14-page code of conduct by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) if they wanted to resume transmission. While Geo and ARY refused to sign, the remaining small channels including Dawn and Aaj agreed and were eventually allowed to resume broadcasts.
