KARACHI: Lashing out at Shoaib Malik for his unimaginative captaincy, former pacer Aaqib Javed said the skipper has been a failure in the ODI series against India.

"Look when you are the captain either you bat low down or bowl regularly. Or bat higher up the order as a specialist batsman. Malik has been unsure of his own role in the team and his decision to open the innings should have come earlier," Javed said.

"With our openers failing consistently I don't understand why he didn't decide to open earlier and set an example. There is bound to be criticism on him because a captain has to earn his place in the team first as a player," he added.

The former pacer also hit out at Mohammad Yousuf, saying the middle-order mainstay was too slow in his scoring.

"He is batting too slow. India has Yuvraj at number four we have Yousuf. Compare them. Yousuf is scoring runs but slowly which are not beneficial for the team," he pointed out.

Javed suggested that Yousuf should be promoted to the opening slot.

"He should, like (Sachin) Tendulkar, open the innings and try to get a big score and set the pace for the rest of the innings like Tendulkar did for India in Gwalior," he said.

"We don't have a stable pair in the middle order which is good at taking sharp singles and also at big hitting. Yuvraj and Dhoni are doing this job admirably for India. We are lacking that. You look at Yousuf the number of times either he has been run out or got someone else run out," Javed said.
