Contemplating a freeze on the foreign tours

MUMBAI: The gag orders on Dilip Vengsarkar is only one of the many measures the Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken on the selection committee. At its office-bearers meeting the BCCI decided that the selectors will no longer be allowed to speak to the media, write columns and sit in the dressing room. What is more, the Board is also planning to impose freeze on foreign travel of the selectors.

Though no official was willing come on record, privately at least two members, who attended the meeting in New Delhi, agreed that the Board feels that there is no need for a selector to travel with the team for overseas tours. The BCCI also wants to them to watch more of domestic cricket rather than international matches.

When contacted, BCCI secretary neither confirmed nor denied about the decisions. “I cannot comment on this,” said Niranjan Shah. He however confirmed that the BCCI wants the selectors to watch more Ranji matches. He also revealed that the Board has instructed the selectors to release the players who are not part of the playing XI. “We don’t want players to sit at the dressing room when their state team is playing,” Shah said.

As for Vengsarkar, the Board said that it did not want a situation wherein they have to clarify for the misinterpretation of the chief selector’s comments in the media. It was learnt that after being advised not to write, Vengsarkar told the Board that he would stop writing syndicated columns but wanted to continue writing the regular columns he has been writing for some time. BCCI wrote back that it cannot allow that either.
