Bharat Patel offered BJP ticket from Visavadar and deputy CM's post

AHMEDABAD: The BJP has pulled off a coup of sorts by drawing Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s bête noire Keshubhai Patel's son Bharat into its camp. The party has apparently made an offer that Patel junior may not be able to refuse: the deputy chief minister's post if the BJP returns to power. Patel is learnt to have been offered the Visavadar Assembly constituency to contest the polls.

Although Bharat denied that he had accepted the offer, sources said that he has sealed the deal. This means that Modi has successfully created a rift in the Patel family and has also dealt a blow to the BJP rebels' campaign. Keshubhai is learnt to have told his close aides that he had failed to prevail upon Bharat.

On Tuesday, Bharat met senior BJP leaders in Delhi where Keshubhai was holding a meeting with the rebel group at his residence to discuss the modalities of joining the Congress. Modi had tried to disrupt the rebels' campaign against him by first trying to woo Keshubhai.

Speaking with DNA from Delhi, Bharat confirmed that the BJP had approached him. "I am considering the offer," he said. Keshubhai is learnt to be miffed by the development and apparently told his son, "Tane jem thik laage tem kar, pan hun aa sarkaar saathe nahin besu (Do whatever you want, but I don't want any truck with this government)." Bharat had earlier stated that he will fight the polls as an independent, but he seems to have been swayed by the deputy CM inducement, sources said.
