NEW DELHI: As Diwali excitement gripped the country on Friday, people decorated their homes with colourful rangolis, placed flowers on doorsteps and on doors, exchanged sweets and arranged diyas as well as twinkling electric bulbs that are so much a feature of what is India's most important festival.

Street vendors did a brisk business in marigold garlands to be used during the evening worship of Lakshmi, the goddess who ushers in prosperity.

The artistic and visual extravaganza has drawn everyone together. "Before the start of the puja and fireworks in the evening, we exchange sweets not only with our relatives, but also with friends from other faiths," said Ashish Malhotra, who runs a travel company in the capital

"After all, sharing one's happiness simply increases it manifold," Malhotra said.

On Diwali night, people eagerly wait to wear their new clothes and burst firecrackers after the puja.

"Although we have stocked crackers of every size, rocket-bombs, sparklers etc., for the evening, I am sure we would still have to run to the shops to buy more crackers. Once the firework starts, you don't realise how quickly your stock gets over!" said Aroonim Sharma, a student.

"I am not fond of the loud firecrackers and the chilli-bombs. They scare the life out of me! I am, however, looking forward to lighting up the skies with the multi-hued sparklers," said Shaina Jain, another student and a resident of north Delhi.

Diwali usually falls in the month of October or November every year. It comes exactly twenty days after Dussehra, another important festival of India. People from all faiths participate it and use the occasion to strengthen family and social relationships.
