LONDON: EU steelmakers will fire the first shot in what could be a major trade battle on Monday when they ask Brussels to hit steel from China and other Asian exporters with anti-dumping duties, an industry source said.

The European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries (Eurofer) will ask the European Commission for punitive duties on imports of stainless steel cold-rolled flat products from China, South Korea and Taiwan, the industry source said.

A second case will be filed against China on hot dipped metallic coated products.

“We are going to file today,” the source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “We are looking into other products with a view to filing soon, notably against China, probably in the next two weeks.”

Asked about the inclusion of South Korea and Taiwan in the first complaint, the source said their imports had surged in percentage terms although by volume were lower than from China.

European trade commissioner Peter Mandelson has voiced growing frustration with China for not taking enough action about its fast-growing trade surplus with the EU, and has cited steel as a specific problem.

Chinese steel exports to the EU are set to double in 2007 to 10 million tonnes from record levels in 2006.
