PAHALGAM: The Centre has directed armed forces to vacate school buildings occupied by them in Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister AK Antony said on Saturday.

"We are taking decisions. We have directed the armed forces to vacate school buildings and other places occupied by them," Antony said after inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports.

On troops cut and relocation, he said the high powered committee formed on the directions of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has submitted its report.

The committee has submitted its report. The government is studying it and assessing the situation, he said.

Antony, who reviewed the security situation during his meeting with army commanders here, said while the situation in the state was improving, the infiltration of militants from across the border was continuing.

On being asked about steps to be taken for improving relations with Pakistan, he said the Centre is making efforts to improve relations with neighbouring countries, including China.

As long as militancy is exists in Jammu and Kashmir and they get support from across the border, problems will continue, he added.

Describing the incidents of suicide among armed forces personnel as a cause of concern, Antony said the number of suicides have come down. He said that his aim was to bring the suicide rate among the security forces to zero level.

The minister later flew to Srinagar where he will meet top army commanders and review the security situation along the Line of Control in the Valley.
