NEW DELHI: The infamous Rizwanur Rehman ‘murder’ case has taken a u-turn after the CBI questioned three eyewitnesses who were perhaps the last persons to see the 27-year-old multimedia expert alive.
Soon after taking over the case on the directions of the court, the agency questioned the train driver, the train guard and the taxi driver who had brought Rizwanur to the Patipur railway line where he allegedly committed suicide.
“We have questioned the three eyewitnesses and they have reiterated that they had seen Rizwanur come in front of the train. Initial investigations suggest it to be a suicide case but we are still investigating other aspects of the case,” said the officer.
Senior officials of the agency said that the twist in the tale came just three days after the CBI team reached Kolkata to investigate the case. The agency had registered a murder case against Ashok Todi, the father of Priyanka Todi, naming him as the prime accused in the case. Officials said that Ashok Todi was not happy with the marriage of his daughter with Rizwanur.
“We are still treating it as a murder case but so far all the eyewitness accounts suggest that the man had jumped in front of the train and was not murdered,” said a senior official part of the investigations.
“We have questioned members of the Todi family but it would be difficult to give out the details of interrogation,” said the officer. Within a day of reaching Kolkata, the CBI team had conducted a dummy test on Sunday with the help of forensic experts. The agency tried to replicate what happened on September 21 when Rizwan died.
“There are three possibilities that we are investigating. Either it was a case of suicide or a murder or an accident,” added the officer. Rizwanur’s body was found on the railway tracks in Patipur on September 21, just over a month after he got married.
