Clashes in Amravati, more than 150 injured

More than 150 people were injured, five of them in police firing, when two groups clashed following a dispute over allegedly playing an objectionable song during Navdurga immersion.

AMRAVATI: More than 150 people were injured, five of them in police firing, when two groups clashed Monday night at Achalpur town following a dispute over allegedly playing an objectionable song during Navdurga immersion by one of the Durgotsava mandals.
    
Prohibitory orders were imposed and shoot at sight orders issued by the district administration following the violence.
    
Police had to fire around 50 rounds to quell the violent crowd.
    
The mob looted jewellery shops in the sarafa lane area of the city and then set them afire, police said, adding more than 170 persons were arrested in this connection.
    
Meanwhile, police said a kerosene vendor who allegedly supplied kerosene to enable a section of the mob indulge in arson has been arrested.
    
A lawyer who allegedly incited the mob was also arrested, police said.
