Doesn’t want Rizwanur death to affect poll prospects

KOLKATA: Cornered over the impact of the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rahman on the forthcoming panchayat elections scheduled next year, the West Bengal government has decided to come out with a host of new development schemes for the minority community in the state.

The state government has also sought suggestions from such organisations like the Jamat-e-Ulama-I-Bangla for further improvements in the implementations of the projects.

According to the state minister in charge minorities development, welfare and madrasah education, Abdus Sattar, the state government has already started development work in Muslim-dominated pockets in West Bengal, where there is no school or college.

Separate funds would be allocated for setting up educational institutions in these areas.
It is learnt that such developmental projects have been initiated following instructions from none other than the state chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

According to Sattar, apart from developing new educational institutions, there are proposals to declare the different government-affiliated madrasahs as minority institutions. Granting of such status would free madrasahs from continuing with mandatory reservation quotas as per government norms.

The state government also has plans to affiliate the different unrecognised madrasahs in West Bengal. There would be government aid for introducing science subjects in madrasahs. There is also a proposal to convert the state’s biggest madrasah, the Calcutta madrasah, into a full-fledged University, Sattar said.

The state government has further added that any suggestion from Muslim religious organisations for further development of the community as a whole will be considered seriously and if necessary implemented.

In his letters to the different Muslim religious organisations, Sattar has also assured that fund crunch would not be a problem in implementing the projects and if necessary the state finance department will sanction special funds.
