LONDON: Bonhams will feature an Indian modern and contemporary art sale of 60 lots as part of its Islamic and Indian art sale in London Oct 25.

Leading, as a surprise, is a classic Raja Ravi Varma painting that is estimated at 50,000-70,000 pounds ($101,500-$142,000). M.F. Husain's 'Female Nude' with a reserve price of 40,000-60,000 pounds is a bit of a dip in nostalgia because it belongs to the 1970s, a fine phase in his evolution.

But it is the feast of eight Souzas that will look for great bids, though they are on paper. Most riveting of all is F.N. Souza's 1961 landscape estimated at 60,000-80,000 pounds.

Other highlights of the sale include Souza's 'Still Life', which is going for 30,000-50,000 pounds. Another Souza, titled 'Northern Lights at Gill's Rock', is estimated at 35,000-40,000 pounds. His 1962 work, a powerful stroked "Head" at 15,000-20,000 pounds, is a poignant reminder of his maverick manner.

Yet another Husain painting 'Horses', has been estimated at 10,000-15,000 pounds while Ganesh Haloi's 'The Lord Buddha the Enlightened' sports an estimate of 10,000-15,000 pounds. Jamini Roy's 'Female Dancer' is valued at 8,000-12,000 pounds, while D.P. Roy Chowdhury's 'An Inmate of the Harem' is priced at 8,000-12,000 pounds.

Roy's 'Krishna and Yashoda' is also going under the hammer at 5,000-7,000 pounds, while S.H. Raza's 'Bombay Street Scene' is being offered between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds.

K.H. Ara's 'Still Life' reflects an estimate of 3,000-5,000 pounds, Jogen Chowdhury's 'Flower' 3,000-4,000 pounds, Laxma Goud's 'Two Women With a Goat' 4,000-6,000 pounds, Avinash Chandra's "The Moon and the Fountain" 8,000-10,000 pounds and a J. Sultan Ali at 5,000-7,000 pounds.

Sadanand Bakre's 'Riverside Scene' is placed at 5,000-7,000 pounds and K.G. Subramanyan's 'Garden Terrace with Divine Visitor' has a reserve price of 6,000-8,000 pounds. Despite being in many auctions, Subramanyan's works have not really fetched any great prices. Experts maintain that there are too many Subramanyan clones who have worked in the same style in the past decade and this is why his works haven't hit a high.

Amrita Sher-Gil's 'Seated Girl' is another highlight that is pegged in the range of 20,000-30,000 pounds. The total estimated value of Indian modern and contemporary section is placed between 363,800 and 526,000 pounds. The Sher-Gil being sold by Bonhams is a study for the artists' well-known work 'Fruit Vendors'.

But the buyer's bargain will be seen in a quaint Badri Narayan and a Jayasri Burman. Narayan's 'King and Queen'is estimated at 2,000-2,500 pounds while Burman's 2002 work 'In Tune with Nature' is estimated at 1,500-2,000 pounds.
