KATHMANDU: Nepal Maoist chief Prachanda met Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala on Saturday to hammer out a consensus after the former rebels registered a parliamentary motion to abolish the monarchy and establish a proportional electoral system in the country.

Prachanda and his deputy Baburam Bhattarai met Prime Minister Koirala in an effort to end the deadlock as the Maoists agreed to a proposal to extend the deadline for amendments in the parliamentary motion by two days to arrive at a consensus on the issue among the seven party alliance members, Nepali Congress general secretary Bimalendra Nidhi said.

The Maoists agreed to the extension of the deadline for amendment in the motion at the request of the CPN-UML. The Maoists tabled the motion seeking to declare Nepal a republic through the Parliament on Friday.

After the agreement among the political parties on the proposal, Speaker Subhash Nemwang has extend the deadline for the introduction of amendments to the Maoists' proposal.

The Maoists have 84 seats in the 330-member parliament and need the support of either Nepali Congress or CPN-UML and other parties to get the required two-third majority vote to pass the landmark resolution.

The Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML have been urging the Maoists to withdraw their motion and decide the matter through the Constituent Assembly polls at the earliest.

Meanwhile, consultations among the major parties continued today as Nepalese are set to celebrate the Hindu festival Vijaya Dashami.

Prachanda, CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Nepal and CPN-Mashal leader Prakash held hectic consultations today to hammer out a solution acceptable to all sides.
