But, corporators question BMC’s decision

The state government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have earmarked a 65-acre land adjoining the Sanjay Gandhi National Park as a land fill site for dumping garbage.

The administration wants to use the land fill site for dumping of debris, inert waste and erect a waste processing plant.

The decision was withheld at the general body meeting of the BMC after doubts raised by corporators were not cleared by the administration.

Although corporators agreed that there is a need for a site in the western suburbs, some were opposed to the spot, especially against a large part of it being demarcated as an industrial zone.

They also said that the site will be used for not just dumping debris but also non-biodegradable waste, contrary to assurances given earlier.

Sheetal Mhatre, Congress corporator, said, “After the Gorai dumping ground was shut down after a court order, there is need for a land fill site in the area.”

Carrying debris to Mulund in large numbers is not possible after the Gorai yard was shut, because the number of the rounds the trucks can take has reduced due to the distance. The city produces over 8,500 tonnes of waste every day.

Mhatre added, “The area around the National Park is residential and dumping of non-biodegradable waste could only aggravate health risks to the locals.”

The decision to reserve the land comes after a meeting of BMC officials with the Urban Development department in May 2004.

The land was given to the corporation by the district collector to be used as a land fill site. Earlier the site was used for quarrying activities.
