Meena Barot is in the fray to become a torchbearer, and on her own has made it to a shortlist of 100. But to get the torch in her hand, she has to the final eight, and for that she needs the votes of her countrymen.

Woman from Belapur in the race to bear the torch at Beijing Olympic Games

Indians world over have done it for Taj Mahal. Now, they need to grab the mouse again for Meena Barot. The 35-year-old, originally from Belapur, is a resident of Shijiazhuang, a small town near Beijing, venue of the 2008 Olympic Games.

She is in the fray to become a torchbearer, and on her own has made it to a shortlist of 100. But to get the torch in her hand, she has to the final eight, and for that she needs the votes of her countrymen.

Based on the criteria set by Beijing Organising Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), Lenovo Group, partnering with China Daily, has launched ‘Lenovo Olympic Torchbearer Nominee Selection Among Foreigners Living In China’.

This campaign will pick top eight runners from other countries, going by the number of votes they receive from compatriots.

To vote for Meena, log on to http://wwwchinadaily.com.cn/olympics/torch_page.html. Voting closes on October 14. “The selection committee will also take into account the comments made by supporters.

So, please remember to add some comment while voting for Meena”, said Pari Barot, Meena’s elder sister Pari Barot.

She added her sister was being flooded with votes from the US, London, Pakistan, Dubai and other places. “The response is great. We hope votes will keep pouring in till the very end.”

With more than 6200 votes in her kitty, Meena is currently in seventh position. She lags 500 votes behind Werner Ebel of
Germany, who is one place ahead in the race.

“It was sudden decision to participate in the contest. Ever since my childhood, I felt a strong urge to represent my country, to do something for it. Being an ordinary person, this is great opportunity for me, and I wish my countrymen to back me to the hilt”, Meena told DNA over phone from China.

A science graduate from Swami Vivekanand College, Chembur, earned a marketing management diploma from Narsee Monji Institute of Management Studies before leaving for China.

“I have been receiving great support from my employers Shalina Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. I hope to be the Indian torchbearer at the Games”, said Meena.
