MUMBAI: In the wake of repeated terror strikes in the country which put the security apparatus in the financial capital on a high alert, city police on Friday appealed to the citizens to inculcate a 'culture' of security and alertness to help them.

"Security is an uphill task and we can never be sure of averting any strikes but our efforts have to be sincere. We need a citizen's crusade in this regard.... security awareness should be a way of life; not for a year or two but for decades to come," Mumbai police commissioner D N Jadhav said on Friday reacting to questions regarding security enhancements after the Ajmer blast.

Jadhav said the police have been trying to multiply their efforts of security by roping in common citizens from different walks of life who can avert any disaster.

"We have held over 3,000 mohalla meets in the last three months and appeal that measures like holding an iftaar party by the police must not be looked in a sectarian way. Instead they should be seen as an investment for the future," he added

Apart from the serial train blasts last year which killed 187 commuters, Mumbai was also witness to communal riots in wake of the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992. The riots were followed by a series of explosions on March 12, 1993 which killed 257.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K L Prasad said security in the city is at 'highest' alert for the last 28 days due to the festive season and there is no scope for it to be improved more in wake of the Ajmer blast Thursday.

Additional inputs to the crime branch and special branch about threats to shrines were given last evening, Jadhav said.

The security arrangements in the city will be on alert for ten more days till the Dussehra.

"Eid will come in a day or two, the Navratri festival has already begun which would culminate with Dussehra. Apart from that, we have two international matches and Mumbai is also the venue for the military world games to start from October 16,"
Jadhav said.

"Today is an important Friday in the holy month of Ramzan and the masterplan prepared by us had the provision for an enhanced nakabandi," Prasad said about the enhanced security arrangements.
