The Standing Committee today put the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposal to spruce up the street furniture on hold and asked the administration to get back with the suggestion put forward by them.

According to committee members, the administration should work on the rules that allow the corporation to explore public-private partnership for the same so that the corporation does not have to spend its money.

Criticised for shoddy condition of city roads, the civic administration tabled two proposals collectively worth Rs3.13 crore for upgradation of road infrastructure.

The first proposal of Rs1.25 crore stated repair and painting of kerb stones, median dividers, zebra crossings, iron rods, railings and grills on roads in zone 1 (A, B, C, D, and E).

It had also made additions that included painting of tree guards, trunks, parapet walls of traffic islands, lane marking and arrow marking amongst the rest. It suggested a change in policy to give the decision of painting in the hands of
central agency.

The second was to install new kerbs and dividers in the suburbs worth Rs1.88 crore. Both are kept pending due to the same suggestion.

Commenting on the proposal Sameer Desai, Congress corporator said, “There are certain roads where the private parties have spent crores of rupees and they have done a good job maintaining the roads.” He cited the example of Annie Besant Road, Worli.

Desai claimed that he had information that in certain wards some private parties have submitted in writing their intention to beautify certain roads and that the assistant commissioners who are authorised to take a
decision should explore that option.

His opinion was seconded by BJP corporator, Bhalchandra Shirsat. Shirsat said, “There are some people who have done a great job spending money beautifying and gained publicity through putting advertisements. These proposals should be looked at first as the corporation can save money.”
