Will get know-how on specialty chemicals for the paper industry

MUMBAI:Energy and environment management company Thermax Ltd has signed a licence agreement with US-based Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC for transfer of technology and manufacturing know-how for specialty chemicals in the paper industry.

M S Unnikrishnan, managing director, Thermax Ltd, who signed the agreement with Peter Williams, vice-president, Georgia Chemicals on Wednesday, said the agreement would perfectly synergise with the company’s business of water management and energy conservation services, which it provides to paper manufacturers. The agreement would be valid for seven years, he said.

The company would be manufacturing the specialty chemicals at its Pune plant (located at Paud in Khopoli) where it manufactures water treatment resins, performance chemicals and oilfield chemicals.

“The products, which Thermax would manufacture under the licensed agreement, would enable it to expand its business in the paper industry in India and South East Asia,” he said.

According to Unnikrishnan, demand for paper in the country is expected to double by 2015, though at present the installed capacity is higher at 8.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) compared with demand (6 mtpa). In anticipation of this demand upsurge, several paper and paper product manufacturers have lined up huge investments on capacity expansion.

“This is a positive sign for Thermax and its products as with the agreement in place, we will now be able to offer further value-added services and solutions to the paper industry,” he said, pointing out that the company’s Pune plant was among the largest in the country.

He said Thermax would now be able to improve the competitive edge of its clients by helping them in improving productivity, reducing raw material and production costs, minimising plant downtime and also ensure increased quality and safety.

“The company is always on the lookout for business improvement and technology development, either in-house or through licensing. As and when an opportunity comes, the company would tap it,” he said.

However, Thermax had no plan to diversify into paper manufacturing, he added.

Thermax also provides integrated solutions in heating, cooling, power, waste management and air pollution control. It is also coming up with a plant at Savli in Gujarat where it will manufacture boilers, chillers and heat recovery equipment, said Unnikrishnan.
