JABALPUR: Tension gripped part of the city on Tuesday as BJP and Youth Congress workers clashed with each other and damaged some vehicles at Malviya Square here, police said.

No injuries were reported, city Superintendent of Police Sidhartha Choudhary said, adding additional force was deployed in the area to prevent any flare up.

Situation became tense when Youth Congress workers, who were taking out a rally on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, came face-to-face with BJP workers who were staging a demonstration against the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, Choudhary said.

Both the groups raised slogans against each other before exchanging blows, he said.

The agitated mob broke windscreen of a car and damaged a couple of two-wheelers, he said, adding that police arrived in strength and used mild force to disperse the crowd.
