NEW DELHI: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will address the United Nations General Assembly in New York and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will flag off a rally here to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which will be celebrated as the International Non-Violence Day.
 
The United Nations had earlier this year adopted a resolution to commemorate the October 2 as the International day of Non-Violence, a culmination of a consensus reached at a conference of global leaders and noble laureates to celebrate the centenary year of Satyagraha.
 
Gandhi left on Friday for New York, where she will address the UN General Assembly and thanked the other countries for the resolution to celebrate the day as International Day of Non-violence.
 
All Indian missions abroad will hold special functions to mark the occasion.
 
In the national capital, Prime Minister will flag off a rally at the AICC headquarters that will go up to the Rajghat, the samadhi of the Father of the Nation.
 
The rally will comprise senior Congress leaders, ministers, MPs and a large number of party workers.
 
Around 10,000 people are expected to participate in the rally.


Commemorative stamps will also be brought out by the government on the occasion.
 
Functions will also be held at universities and schools all over the country.
 
Pursuant to the consensus reached at a convention held in New Delhi to celebrate the centenary year of Satyagraha, Gandhi had written to the Prime Minister to formally take up the matter with the US.
 
She also wrote to the Secretary General of the UN for observing October 2 as Non-violence day.
 
The Prime Minister has appealed to the UN in this regard.
 
On June 15 this year, a resolution, with a record number of 143 countries as co-sponsors, was adopted for celebrating October 2 as International Non-violence Day.
 
Newly appointed Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will also attend the function at UN.
 
This is Rahul's first trip abroad after taking over as AICC General Secretary.
