CHENNAI: The AIADMK today filed a petition in the Madras High Court to declare the bandh called by the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu on October one as unconstitutional.
The petition filed by the party, represented by its presidium chairman, E Madhusudhanan, is likely to come up for hearing on Thursday.
The petitioner sought to restrain the DMK and its allies from proceeding with the bandh.
The petitioner also sought a direction to the DMK, represented by its president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, to deposit a sum of Rs 100 crore with the Chief Secretary. The sum could be utilised to compensate for damages that could be caused by political parties to the public.
After a DPA meeting here on Monday, Karunanidhi had announced that a bandh would be observed in the state on October one, to demonstrate to the Centre that people wanted speedy implementation of the Sethusamudram Project.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the meeting.
