Party plans to bring back Jaydev to curb wife Smita’s political ambition

After more than a decade in the wilderness, Jaydev Thackeray, elder brother of Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray, seems poised for a comeback. With family wrangles sorting out nicely, Matoshree is ready to welcome back the prodigal son.

While a few Sena observers say that Jaydev is being brought back to take up a key party post, others peg his future role as successor to the Thackeray family’s art (paintings and cartoons) and media (Sena mouthpiece Saamna) businesses — a responsibility Raj Thackeray had shouldered before he left Sena to join Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Perhaps, a clear pointer to it is Saamna resuming Jaydev’s column under a new title,“Mano Ya Na Man”, after almost eight years.

Like his father Bal Thackeray, Jaydev too is a good cartoonist, as well as a painter. Once, he had threatened to join NCP following a family dispute.

“Jaydev is now on good terms with his father, thanks to Uddhav’s initiative. The eldest of the Thackeray brothers did Uddhav a good turn by wooing back many influential workers back to the party fold,” said sources

Jaydev severed his ties with Matoshree in 1995. Political pundits say that Uddhav is keen to get him involved in party works. The move also aims to counter the political aspirations of Jaydev’s estranged wife, Smita Thackeray, who recently spelt out her ambition to take a plunge in active politics.

Jayadev, however, said that he has no plan to join the party, “As of now, there is no such concrete plan, I am busy with my paintings and writings. My brother has taken over the reins of the party. I will be looking after the family’s art and media businesses.”

Sena MP Sanjay Raut said Jayadev had been busy with his writings and paintings for the past several years.

Sena spokesman Neelam Gorhe welcomed Jaydev’s column in Saamna. She claimed that there was never a deliberate move to bring someone back to replace one who has left the party.
