PATNA: Stating that only that amount of pressure should be used on the admininstration which it can sustain, Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday rubbished charge of being 'a soft chief minister'.

"I am not a soft chief minister as projected by the media," Kumar told reporters on the sidelines of 'janta durbar' and rubbished the opposition's charge that the government had lost its grip on the administrtion.

Replying to question that his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Mayawati, in one go, cancelled the appointment of over 6,000 constables and suspended 12 IPS officials for committing irregularities in the recruitment of constables, Kumar said he believes in applying that amount of pressure which the administration can sustain. In case of too much pressure, the system will collapse, he added.

Kumar said he inherited a 'rickety' administration and depleted workforce saying that all the departments were running at 50-60 per cent of their sanctioned strength, which badly hampered developmental work.

"I do not understand as to why regular appointments were not made during the RJD regime," he said.

Kumar added that to lessen the workload of the existing staff, the government has decided to launch a major recruitment drive.
