ISLAMABAD: The US has warned its citizens against making non-essential travel to Pakistan in light of the Taliban and al Qaeda posing 'a potential danger to Americans' in the Islamic state.

The US Department of State issued the travel warning and informed American citizens of security concerns in Pakistan.

A statement by State department warned US citizens against non-essential travel to Pakistan in light of the threat of terrorist activity.

It also cautioned Americans currently in Pakistan to maintain a good situational awareness, avoid crowds and demonstrations and keep a low profile.

According to the statement, the presence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Pakistan poses a potential danger to American citizens.

It notes that terrorists have demonstrated their willingness and capability to attack targets where Americans are known to congregate or visit, such as hotels, clubs and restaurants, places of worship, schools, or outdoor recreation events, the Daily Times reported today.

The travel warning asked US citizens travelling to Pakistan to register with the embassy in Islamabad or the consulates in Karachi, Lahore, or Peshawar to obtain updated information on the problem of terrorism in Pakistan.

Pervasive violence in the Middle East could increase the danger not only for Americans but for other Westerners as well, the State Department warning said.

Suicide bombings and attacks in the country have increased in recent months especially after Pakistani Taliban scrapped a peace deal with the government in Waziristan and the military stormed the Taliban-linked Lal Masjid in Islamabad in July.
