The 62-yr-old had a narrow escape as her son misfired

MUMBAI: Barely days after a hotelier opened fire on his older brother over a property dispute, a 40-year-old autorickshaw driver shot at his mother on Tuesday allegedly because he wanted a share in a Rs1.5crore flat she owns.

Sixty two-year-old Vasundhara Bandekar narrowly escaped the bid on her life as the bullet, fired from a 0.32mm revolver, lodged itself in a wall. Ganesh, her son, is absconding.

“He had been impatient and arrogant but I never thought that he would attack his own mother for property,” Vasundhara told DNA.

According to Juhu police, Ganesh went to meet his mother, who lives with her younger son Rajesh at Aparna Apartment in Irla, Andheri (west), around 8.30pm on Tuesday.

“When Vasundhara opened the door, Ganesh asking for Rajesh. Fearing that he might harm his brother, she shut the door,” senior police inspector Pradeep Shinde said.

But minutes later Ganesh returned. This time, he entered the house after breaking one of the glass windows. “The moment Ganesh saw Vasundhara, he fired a round at her. Fortunately she survived as the bullet hit the wall,” added Shinde.

Vasundhara raised an alarm, following which Ganesh fled the spot. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder. Ganesh is also wanted in a murder case registered at Dadar police station for killing his step-sister Nisha’s husband.

Ganesh had separated from the family in 1995. But he began demanding his share of the property, as he wanted to purchase his own flat at Mira Road.

The flat at Aparna Apartment is in Vasundhara’s name. Her husband Vasudev, an employee of the Reserve Bank of India, died seven years ago. “Vasudev had two daughters - Usha and Nisha - from his first wife. His first wife died and the daughters were married and settled. In July, Ganesh killed Nisha’s husband,” Shinde said.

Last Saturday, Mohan Shetty, a hotel owner from Grant Road, shot his brother Manohar in front of their mother in a fit of rage.
