NEW DELHI: Leading global provider of communications and networking solutions, BT, plans to focus on the broadcast and media segment in India in a big way. Currently, the company is a major service provider in the IT and BPO categories.

With the country gradually moving towards digital media economy, BT has decided to set up three specially-equipped nodes — in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai — to serve the media segment, where it sees a huge potential, Arun Seth, chairman and managing director of BT India said at a conference here on Tuesday.

The company will collaborate with its corporate customers by processing voice and video data and distributing the same digitally to a global audience.

Globally, BT is significantly entrenched in the media segment, with specialised nodes in around 15 cities including Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto, and London.

On the whole, BT will have multiple nodes (connecting points) across New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune for its multi-protocol label switching infrastructure, increasing the number of nodes to 14 in India.

With this, India will have the highest number of nodes in the world.
In addition, neighbouring Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will receive independent nodes by the end of next year.

India will also be a base for innovation and IPR licensing. So far, BT has 7,400 patents worldwide, and it filed 109 patent applications in 2004-05.

In India, the company is targeting revenue worth $250 million by the year 2009. However, the company did not reveal the current revenue in the country.

BT has more than 300 multi-site customers, including MNCs such as Unilever, Cisco, Microsoft, Unisys and HP. Domestic IT majors like Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, and Infosys are also its clients.
