ISLAMABAD: The lawyers for Nawaz Sharif, who was expelled to Saudi Arabia on Monday hours after his arrival from London, have approached the Supreme Court through a constitutional petition challenging his forced deportation and seeking initiation of the contempt of court proceedings against Musharraf for flouting the apex court directives.

Filed by the former attorney general of Pakistan, Fakhruddin G Ibrahim, the petition maintains that by deporting Sharif, the government has committed a sheer contempt of court in a conscious bid to erode its authority and action should be taken against all those who are responsible, especially Musharraf.

A seven-member Supreme Court bench had ordered on August 23 that the government should neither hinder the return of Sharif or should be arrested without prior court permission.

The petition, which is likely to cause a fresh confrontation between the apex court and the government, has also asked the court to direct the government to immediately secure the return of Nawaz Sharif and produce him before the court.

Sharif’s nephew Hamza Shehbaz said the Sharifs would fight in the court. However, attorney general Malik Mohammad Qayyum said, while appearing before the apex court, that he has been informed by the government that Sharif was exiled to Saudi Arabia as per his own will.

However, Fakharuddin G Ibrahim, rebuked the attorney general’s claim and described it “utter nonsense”, adding that he should not have returned to Pakistan against all odds had he been willing to proceed to Saudi Arabia.

Who will be prosecuted and who will be convicted in the wake of contempt of court? Analysts say the government would be asked by the court who is responsible for deporting Sharif in transgression of the apex court ruling.

What will happen if the executive refused to accept the Supreme Court verdict? Will the next step be to teach the apex court and the chief justice a lesson? Musharraf no doubt faces the biggest threat from highest court.
