Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) has ordered a resurvey of the structural stability of 16,000 cessed buildings in the city. Thirty-five people were killed and 24 injured after three cessed buildings collapsed in the past one month.

The decision to carry out such a post-monsoon survey was taken by the Mumbai Buildings Repair and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB) recently. Explaining the board’s decision, Sachin Ahire, chairman of MBBRB said, “Apart from the age and outer physical structure, Mhada has no mechanism to verify if the building is structurally sound. Also, we have no technical reports giving information of the kind of material used in the building.”

Mhada is planning to rope in 150 architects to help in the survey. Ahire said the lack of residents’ contribution was accentuating the problem of repairing and redeveloping dilapidated buildings in the city. “While it will take time, but the government’s move to redevelop cessed buildings will be beneficial.” MHADA wants to develop such buildings through joint venture with private developers.
