Investigations into the fake certificate racket busted by the Mumbai Crime Branch on August 17, show that the accused made bogus certificates and marksheets not only for those applying to the University of Mumbai, but also for several job aspirants and students who wanted to go abroad.

The arrested have been identified as Kunjankumar Verma, Sanjay Bansude, Khalid Khan, Wilson Nadar, Arun Kokankar, Santosh Shirsa, Bharat Mane and Mamta Yadav. Crime branch officials have also submitted a list of names of 51 students who they suspect to have secured admission in the university with fake certificates provided by the accused.

“If someone required a graduate degree to obtain a job abroad, the accused would provide them with the same for monetary benefits,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria on Sunday. Students have been charged as much as Rs50,000 for a fake certificate.

The varsity has formed a three-member committee to begin an internal probe. The committee consists of the registrar, the controller of examinations and a director from the board of a college. “The committee will try to find the loopholes in the working of the varsity. It will investigate the alleged involvement of insiders in the university and propose appropriate action,” said Vijay Khole, vice-chancellor of the university.

Khole said the university comes across cases of students applying with bogus documents every year. “This is however the first time that 51 names have appeared,” he said.

The police have recovered more that 160 fake certificates including degrees from various universities. According to the police, Verma had advertised that he could help students who had failed their class 12 board exams get admission to colleges. Students were provided with fake certificates from educational institutes with the help of Verma’s associates. Mane, a clerk in the university, helped students with any problems during the admission process.
