Question students, teachers; take one Mohd Shadab into custody

HYDERABAD: The Islamic clergy in Hyderabad has taken strong objection to the overnight raids by state police on some half-a-dozen madrassas.

Based on info obtained during one such raid, police have taken Md Shadab into custody on suspicion of involvement in Saturday's bombings that killed 41 people.

Shadab was reportedly picked up from his home in Saleemnagar, Malakpet Colony, on Thursday night on a tip-off from students and teachers at a madrassa.

Shadab knows Bilal, the prime suspect in last May's Mecca Masjid blast and also believed to be behind the twin blasts in the city last week. Police believe Bilal is a HuJI operative who left the country in 2004 and is currently in Bangladesh.

Shadab reportedly facilitated alleged ISI operatives and people involved in subversive activities over the last two years. He has allegedly been in regular contact with Bilal on internet chat.

Meanwhile, the midnight raids by local police on several city madrassas have ruffled quite a few feathers. Deeni Madrasa Board, representing all madrassas in the state, has taken a serious note of the police visits and complained to chief minister YSR Reddy.

Board secretary Moulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani took serious objection to the manner in which the raids are being conducted in the dead of the night even at times allegedly roughing up students.

Police apparently visited the Darul Uloom madrassa at Shibvrampally on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the Darul Uloom Anwarul Huda at Kishanbagh and Jamia Ayesha Siddiqa Lil Banat, a women's religious school in Misriganj. The heads of various madrassas met on Thursday to discuss the situation arising out of the police action.

With exactly a week to the blasts, the police are taking special precaution in the city which is slated to host several international events in September-October.

While the Ganesh festival and the International Astronautical Congress will be held later this month, the World Military Games are scheduled from October 14 to 21.
