DHAKA: Describing the recent student unrest as a conspiracy to ignite civil-military confrontation, the interim government in emergency-ruled Bangladesh has said it had saved the nation from a civil war.

"There were dreadful plans to pit common people against the army, but we have been able to overcome the situation. We have saved the nation from a civil war," law adviser Mainul Hosein told head of news services of private television channels on Monday evening.

Hosein said the 'army-backed national government' of Fakhruddin Ahmed had a roadmap to establish democracy instead of staging an election alone like the previous caretaker governments and warned against attempts to frustrate its 'exit plan'.

"We have an exit plan and if it is hindered, the survival plan of many people will be frustrated too," he said but did not elaborate.

Hosein's comments came a week after the government faced its worst crisis as riots erupted in Dhaka University on August 20 with students opposing the presence of army on the campus. The violence spilled to six divisional cities as well and left one person dead and over 400 injured.

The government on Monday lifted the curfew imposed on Wednesday in the six cities.

"As the law and order situation has stabilized, the curfew is withdrawn," the Home Ministry said in a statement.

Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed had recently said he suspected a 'plot' behind the unrest.

He described it as a conspiracy by 'corrupt and dishonest politicians' to destroy the image of the government by 'mobilising crores of taka in hours'.
