It is easy to become a ‘doctor’ and set up a ‘clinic’, after purchasing a ‘degree’, sold in the city for Rs 500-1000. A raid by Zone VII police on Thursday night, that led to the arrest of eight quacks, reveal this bitter truth.

According to the police, the quacks have been running their clinics, armed with certificates of Bachelor of Unani Medical Science (BUMS).

“They got the certificates after paying Rs 500 to Rs1,000. These certificates, with fake stamps of different universities are printed and sold

in Dadar. It is a big racket and these arrest will help us nab the kingpin of the printing and sale of fake certificates racket,” said an investigating officer of the Mulund police.

Among those arrested, some are retired BMC teachers, compounders and some have never gone to school. Based on a tip-off, the police laid a trap and arrested the quacks.

“They had opened clinics, with fake certificates, at several places in Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Kannawar Nagar in Vikhroli (East) and Parksite in Vikhroli (West),” said Dattatray Karale, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VII).

The police are investigating whether any patient suffered some side-effects after treatment by these quacks. “There are many clinics that are run by quacks, whom we are going to arrest soon,” said DCP Karale.

He added that investigations are on and soon more arrests will be made. Those arrested have been identified as Samsuddin Khan, 48, Shahid Hussain, 35, Dilipkumar Vishwas, 28, Mahmad Shaikh, 36, Kamar Shaikh, 30, Asif Shaikh, 28, Nisar Ahmed, 32, and Suryashankar Kira, 34. All have been charged under several sections of the IPC for cheating and remanded to judicial custody.
