NEW DELHI: The government on Monday said it will launch an energy efficient version of traditional kerosene lamp by this Deepawali as part of efforts to meet the rising energy demand in the country.

The energy efficient lamp, similar to the in-use kerosene ones, would be called 'Nutan Deep' and launched by Deepawali (November 9), Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said at the foundation laying function of ONGC's new office cum energy research centre here.

Nutan Deep would run on kerosene but save more than 50 per cent fuel and give better lighting. "This scheme will benefit crores of rural households who use these lamps for lighting their houses," Deora said.

He said the lamps would be supplied to people at an subsidised price, which he did not disclose.

Deora said the government was committed to protecting the interests of 'aam aadmi' as has been displayed by not hiking prices of kerosene and domestic LPG - household fuel mainly used by BPL families - despite the unprecedented rise in international prices of crude oil.

The government was also implementing environment-friendly fuel policies and an equitable energy provisioning to sustain rapid economic growth, he said making a mention of the programme to blend sugarcane extracted ethanol in petrol.

"Under this programme, we have targeted a 5 per cent blend of ethanol in petrol and in the first phase about 60 crore litres of ethanol will be procured per year," he said, adding that 9 crore litres ethanol had already been procured.

Besides, energy conservation remains a key focus, Deora said, adding that government was duty bound to implement the Euro-IV fuel emission norms by 2010.
