BEIJING: The death toll from typhoon Sepat that wrecked havoc in east China's Zhejiang and Fujian provinces has risen to at least 14, local officials said.

At least 11 people were killed and over 60 injured when a tornado hit east China's Zhejiang province while two others were dead when typhoon Sepat lashed Fujian province.

One more person was killed by house collapse in Zhejiang province, bringing the death toll from typhoon Sepat to 14.

The victim was a farmer evacuated from Wencheng County of Wenzhou City, Xinhua news agency reported.

Sepat brought rainfall of 40 millimetre per hour to Wencheng County, disrupting power supply in eight townships and villages.

Before its landfall, Sepat spawned a tornado that smashed buildings and killed at least 11 people in the Cangnan township of Wenzhou yesterday night.

In Fujian province where the typhoon slammed on land, two people were killed and one was missing in a landslide.

Typhoon Sepat landed in Chongwu town of Quanzhou City early today, lashed the central and north parts of the province with gale and rainstorm.

Rainfall in the last 24 hours reached 200 millimetres in 11 of Fujian's 95 counties, cities and districts and exceeded 300 millimetres in two regions.

The typhoon damaged 366 houses in Quanzhou City of Fujian, inundated over 10,000 acres of crops, cut off road traffic and power supply lines in some regions, affecting 162,600 people and inflicting an economic loss of 72 million yuan (USD 9.5 million).

The typhoon also caused severe damages in Zhejiang, ruining 40,000 acres of crops and wrecking 28.7 km of power supply lines, affecting 616,000 people across the province and resulting in a direct economic loss of 250 million yuan (USD 32.9 million).

Sepat is expected to hit Jiangxi province later today but has weakened to strong tropical storm.

More than 900,000 people in south China's Guangdong province and eastern provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang have been relocated to safety before the typhoon's arrival.
