Salman Khan Foundation, a trust that actor Salman Khan’s family set up to help the needy recently got an ailing Varsha Gimonkar—the first case taken up by the Foundation—operated upon. Varsha has not only recovered from her illness but also got a new lease of life.
Dr Sandeep Chopra, chief medical coordinator of the foundation, says, “Salman and Salim uncle have always been involved with charity. However, there was no way to gauge whether the money that they were giving was being used in the right manner or not.
So they decided to set up this foundation.” He adds, “Varsha is now feeling healthy and has been discharged. When Salim uncle met her family, he was told that the the children had been blessed by a new mother. It was rewarding for Salim uncle to see the satisfaction in their eyes.”
Salim says, “We are doing all we can to help society. I’m happy that Varsha has recovered. The doctor is happy with her progress. Her family became emotional and expressed their gratitude. With the Salman Khan Foundation, we intend to make our dream of helping people into a reality.”
Apparently, ever since the Khans have set up this Foundation, they have been inundated with requisition letters for financial aid. Dr Chopra shares, “With the success of the first case, the number of letters and requests received have grown huge. Other people have also approached us asking as to how they can do their bit in supporting the cause.
We are carefully screening the needy as per the urgency,” he says adding, “Next we plan to operate on a four-year-old child who is suffering from a kidney disorder. We’ve contacted Dr Sameer Desai for this and he’s more than willing to help us.”
